On Dec 17, International Seminar on “Future of Font-Reconstruction of the Value of Chinese Font Pattern” was held jointly by the Printing Technology Association of China and Institute of Computer Science & Technology of Peking University, sponsored by Beijing Founder Electronics Co.ltd in Beijing. This is an international seminar specializing on the future design and application of Chinese font, which attracted around 200 professional persons to attend the demonstration site, including font designers and graphic designers from home and abroad.

The jury committee of the 4th “Founder Award” Competition on Chinese Font Design and Poster Design, including Jin Liqiang, Akira Kobayashi(Japanese), Lv Shengzhong, Yu Bingnan, Li Shaobo, Zhu Zhiwei and Xubin, make up the authoritative expert team of this seminar. They, together with the respective experts and leaders from the Printing Technology of China, Institute of Computer Science Technology of Peking University as well as Found Electronics, carry out heated discussion on the future development of Chinese font from various special angels of view, such as “yesterday, today and tomorrow of Chinese font design”, “the application and development of Chinese font in modern media” etc. This again pushes the application of “Chinese font” up to the discussion climax, which aroused arguments in public and has been re-recognized among the publics in this year.

Chinese font culture once has been one of the most glorious one among Chinese culture history, however, the value of Chinese font culture has been neglected in the present digital association era. The creativity and production of the industry is moving hard in the lost market, the glorious has been clouded although it has existed for thousands of years. In the view of the severe reality, how to reconstruction of the value of Chinese font becomes the top subject for the present font development, this is also the major subject of this seminar.

Although the sponsor of this seminar already covers the authority of China printing circle, the subject involved in these sharp dialogs among group of elites of font design and art designs has been extended into broader field from the initial application of printing fonts. Sharp questions of the application and added value of the fonts of the times, such as the application of individualized font, and the design and application of the font in new media, were discussed by the attending experts. These ideas from different regions and different design fields provide the future development of Chinese font with very important references.

Mr Jin Liqiang, who takes the position of the jury committee of international font competition for many times and also enjoy famous reputation in design fields, believes: it became very urgent to build up new space for the development of Chinese font whatever in the view of culture transmission or the application of modern society. Meanwhile famous Japanese font designer Akira Kobayashi introduced the successful experiences in the design of western font during this seminar, from which many practitioner in Chinese font were illumined greatly. Akira Kobayashi were respected as the No. 1 of western font in Japan because of the western fonts designed by him, including ヒラギノdynasty and AXIS

Mr. Zhu Zhiwei, Senior font designer of Founder Electronics, who has engaged in Chinese font for years, spoke frankly: comparing with the public attention on the font art design of other countries like Japan and Korea, the art and its application of Chinese art is still far away from public attention. Most of the font design practitioner of the participants believe: the industry application environment is still waiting for standard and mature, there is still huge room to improve on the attention and protection of intellectual property, in this situation, the development, design and application of Chinese font is far way from the relevant developing space of other font market, which is not in compliance with the value of Chinese font comparing with others. President of Founder Electronics Mr. Liu Xiaokun also expressed: Founder Electronic, as the biggest domestic font supplier, will undertake more responsibility in inspiring and leading the market in future.

It is said that the demanding on the personalized font started to reflect its value after Xujinglei introduced her personnel font with the support of Found Electronics. This already provided support on how to extend and add value to the value of font design, also it encourage more and more persons, who love Chinese fonts, devote into the work related with the application and development of Chinese font.
