Case of accusation of letterform violation by Beida Fangzheng Group to Blizzard listed into 2007top 10 intellectual property right cases in China.

Recently, “China Economy Weekly” has chose through the public appraises 2007 top 10 intellectual property right cases, among which the case of accusation of letterform violation by Beida Fangzheng Group to Blizzard ranked first , there were other cases such as the Intel against Dongjin case, Lingtong Sci-tech against American Patent case, Topology patent case etc included.

2007 is a year specially recorded by its works of intellectual property right protections. Till the end of last year, the amount of declaration of inventions and patents in China ranked third in the whole world, brand declarations first for recent continuous years. China has become a great intellectual property country in the aspect of the amount. On the day of 5th March 2008, Premier Wen Jiabao declared in the governmental work report of National People’s Congress of China that China “would implement the intellectual property right strategies”.

In August of 2007, American Blizzard Company was accused of violation because it had copied and used great amount of Fangzheng letterforms developed by Fangzheng Group in its on-line game World of Warcraft. Presently this case has been accepted by Beijing Municipal Superior Court.

The case of accusation of Beida Fangzheng against Blizzard was named as the “Biggest case of Sino-America IT intellectual property rights” by Chinese media, which was also one of the intellectual property right cases of Chinese companies claiming for most amount of compensations from American companies since entry of China into WTO. The compensation here amounted to 100 million Yuan RMB.

This case has drawn broad attentions from the domestic and international reporters, many TV, written and internet medias such as “At First Instant” of CCTV-2, “Reports of Chinese Legal System” of CCTV-12, Xinhua News Agency, China News Agency, “People Daily” “Guangming Daily” “Economy Daily” “Science and Technology Daily” “Legal Daily” “21st Century Economy Report” “Beijing Youth Daily” “China Securities Daily” “Southern Daily” , Xinhua Net, People Net, China News Net, Sina, Sohu, 163.com, Yahoo! China, Ten cent and Yesky etc have given reports and appraises to this case in succession.

The accusation of Beida Fangzheng to Blizzard has founded a nice example and model for other Chinese enterprises, it can be believed that there will be more and more Chinese enterprises will stand out to protect their own intellectual property rights and benefits with legal weapons.
